Environmental Studies Building, Kashiwa Campus, The University of Tokyo

The Environmental Studies Building is a general research facility constructed at the Kashiwa Campus of University of Tokyo under PFI initiatives to house the new Environmental Studies Division.

The utilization of natural energy and flexibility to meet emerging research needs are symbolic of research into the environment and promotion of interdisciplinary integration in the new fields of study was a primary focus of the architectural design.

PFI initiatives have many restrictions due to nature of the contract and the organizations on both the client side and contractor side are engaged in a multiple layered structure. The project was smoothly and organically completed during all phases from concept, design, construction and operation through the cooperation of project management of the University and professionals.
