Ninth People's Hospital of Shenzhen

A general hospital with 600 beds in Longgang District of Shenzhen. The aim was to achieve energy-saving architecture using natural lighting and ventilation under the concept of a "breathing hospital". Waiting rooms of lower floors and other spaces have open ends to secure natural illumination and ventilation. On the upper floors (hospital wards) a natural ventilation system has been designed that utilizes ascending air currents created by the stack effect in voids at the side of restrooms between patients' rooms. Openings at the ends of halls lend a bright, clean atmosphere to the hospital.
